Upcoming revision

Requiem — Wed, 07/08/2009 - 08:52

Over the past few days I've been examining the sources in their current state, and I've determined that it's time for a complete overhaul of the codebase. So I'm rewriting the code from scratch. This promises to be a rather difficult task as the DVD drive in my Wii is completely shot. In other worse, we'll need testers. Not just drooling "glad to have the software" testers, but patient testers who are willing to run revision after revision of broken, pre-alpha code. As soon as I can get funding to acquire a new "development" Wii, test compiles will be a nightmare for any of the disc-loading routines.

The new loader framework will fix a number of bugs that exist in the current codebase, however, it will undoubtedly add new ones as well. One of the core features of the new codebase is proper filesystem support. Sure, we'll support WBFS too, but users really need a standardized filesystem to expand this beyond a simple backup loader. To aid in this, we will be splitting development across a few new projects for filesystem access. These libraries should be abstract enough that they can be used safely in other projects, and will be available for use under the LGPL or a similar license.

Next up is the ocarina-style cheating core. This will be self-contained and will NOT require .gct files. Again, LGPL.

Let's hope this brings some life back into the project!
